AEP's Kanawha River 345 kV series capacitor installation; Subsynchronous resonance studies and torsional measurements
- American Electric Power Service Corp., Columbus, OH (US)
This paper reports on a 787 MVAr series capacitor compensation scheme installed for service in 1991 at American Electric Power's (AEP's) Kanawha River 345 kV station. It will compensate the Kanawha-Matt Funk 345 kV line in southeastern part of the AEP system. This line is now limited to about 950 MW by the voltage drop and related large phase angle separation that develops across this line during heavy system loading conditions. The series capacitor installation will have 131.2 MVAr and 262.5 MVAr segments on one platform compensating about 10% and 20% of the line reactance, respectively, and one 393.7 MVAr segment on a second platform compensating an additional 30% of the line reactance. The insertion of series capacitors will increase the line loadability by approximately 600 MW. This series capacitor installation will also be used to test the application of a prototype power flow control device (using thyristors) on this line as part of the AEP-ASEA Brown Boveri (ABB) Joint Research Project.
