New plan to pipe gas from Prudhoe
As an alternative to the costly Alaska Natural Gas Transportation System that would pipeline Prudhoe Bay gas to the Lower 48 States, the Trans Alaska Gas System would carry gas to the southern coast of Alaska for liquefaction and shipment to Japan at a considerable investment saving. The natural gas liquids would be either used as feedstock at a petrochemical complex in Alaska or sold to Japan or another Pacific country. TAGS could be operational by 1988, 2 years sooner than the ANGTS proposal, offering the outlet for Prudhoe gas needed to step up oil production. Envisioned in three stages of completion, TAGS would produce 5.3 million tons of LNG by 1988 and 16 million tons by the completion of the final stage in 1992. This would accommodate the market as it grows in Japan while starting the cash flow in the early stage to help pay for the later construction.
