Research on inorganic polymer systems. Quarterly report, 1 April-30 June 1960
This report covers investigation on the chemistry of thermally stable inorganic and semi-inorganic polymer systems showing promise of utility at 1000/sup 0/F. The bonding systems under study at US Borax Research Corporation are B-B, B-N and Al-O; contractors are investigating polymers based on ..pi..-bonding and on tin. In the B-B system, promising polymeric products have been obtained by the thermal treatment of tetraaminodiborons, particularly tetra(anilino)diboron. Unique diboron compounds with aryl and alkyl substituents have been prepared as precursors for linear polymers. In the B-N system, resinification studies of borazoles were completed and a copolymeric resin with good thermal stability was prepared. Numerous chemical reactions of borazoles were explored with an objective of synthesizing difunctional borazole monomers. In the Al-O system, several dialkyl-aluminum derivatives have been synthesized and examined as polymer intermediates. A number of Al-S compounds were prepared by novel techniques, but do not appear to be as desirable as Al-O compounds as polymer constituents. Pyrolysis studies of aluminum alkoxides were completed, and strong evidence for an ionic mechanism was found. Polymerization by pyrolysis has given promising copolymeric polyaluminoxanes and polyaluminosiloxanes.
