Title: Cleveland voters strike a blow for public power. [Reject offer to sell municipal utility]

Journal Article · · Public Power; (United States)
OSTI ID:6301064

Voters in Cleveland, Ohio rejected a move by an investor-owned utiliy to buy their municipal electric utility (Muny Light). The strong vote for public power will mean lower rates will continue and will serve as a yardstick for comparing the privately-owned Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. (CEI) on rates and services. The lower rates for city lighting will save tax money, and control of city services will remain public. The vote also serves notice that anti-trust activities by power companies will not be tolerated. The effort to take over Muny began in 1960 and involved a high-pressure CEI campaign, which was successfully countered by city officials and the electorate.
