The new triangular clusters [PtCo[sub 2](CO)[sub 7]([mu]-dppm)] (1), [PtMo[sub 2]Cp[sub 2](CO)[sub 5]([mu]-dppm)] (2), and [PtW[sub 2]Cp[sub 2](CO)[sub 5]([mu]-dppm)] (3) were obtained from the reactions of [PtCl[sub 2]([eta][sup 2]-dppm)] with 2 equiv of the carbonylmetalates [Co(CO)[sub 4]][sup [minus]], [Mo(CO)[sub 3]Cp][sup [minus]], or [W(CO)[sub 3]Cp][sup [minus]], respectively. In the case of [Mn(CO)[sub 5]][sup [minus]] and depending on the stoichiometry used, the bimetallic [([eta][sup 2]-dppm)PtCl[l brace]Mn(CO)[sub 5][r brace]] (4) or the trinuclear chain [(OC)[sub 5]Mn[ovr Pt(CO)([mu]-dppm)M]n(CO)[sub 4]] (5) were obtained instead. Clusters 2 and 3 react reversibly with CO to give respectively the chain complexes [Cp(OC)[sub 3]Mo[ovr Pt(CO)([mu]-dppm)M]o(CO)[sub 2]Cp] (6) and [Cp(OC)[sub 3]W[ovr Pt(CO)([mu]-dppm)W](CO)[sub 2]Cp] (7), analogous to 5. Cluster 1 undergoes CO substitution by dppm to give [PtCo[sub 2](CO)[sub 5]([mu]-dppm)[sub 2]] (8) in which the Pt-Co bonds are bridged by dppm ligands. Alternate methods of synthesis for the above compounds were found. On the basis of these results, the influence of the nature of the d[sup 8] metal (Pd or Pt), of the carboxymetalates, and of the dppm stoichiometry of the products is discussed. 35 refs.
