Mechanism of iron(III) sorption from neutral aqueous solutions on ion-exchange resins
Sorption of forms of iron(III) was studied in static conditions of KU-2 x 8chS cation-exchange resin and AV-17 x 8chS anion-exchange resin of nuclear class. The iron(III) concentrations were determined by a standard method with the use of sulfosalicylic acid. The pH of the original solutions was maintained at 6.0-7.5. The forms of iron sorbed on the cation- and anion-exchangers were identified with the aid of Moessbauer spectroscopy. The targets were samples of ion-exchange resins withdrawn from iron(III) solutions and dried in air. The source of resonance ..gamma.. radiation was /sup 5/)2'Co in chromium. Curves for sorption of different forms of iron(III) from neutral aqueous solutions (pH = 6.0-7.5) on the cation-exchanger in H)2=(Na)2=) forms and the anion-exchanger in OH)2)(Cl)2)) forms are shown. It has been shown that sorption of iron(III) from neutral aqueous solutions on ion-exchangers proceeds not only by an ion-exchange but also by an adsorption mechanisms in the course of precipitation chromatography. In particular, their results explain the sorption of dissolved products of iron corrosion not only on the cation-exchangers but also on the anion-exchanger in mixed ion-exchange beds in industrial power plants.
