The excitation-transfer reaction between N/sub 2/(A/sup 3/..sigma../sub u//sup +/,v=0,1) and Cd atoms has been studied in a fast flow reactor at 300 K. The total quenching rate constants are (7.7 +/- 3.0) x 10/sup -10/ and (6.1 +/- 1.4) x 10/sup -10/ atom/sup -1/ cm/sup 3/ s/sup -1/ for the v = 0 and v = 1 states of N/sub 2/(A/sup 3/..sigma../sub u//sup +/), respectively. Excitation rate constants for formation of Cd(5/sup 3/P/sub 1/), Cd(5/sup 3/P/sub 0,2/), Cd(5/sup 1/P/sub 1/), and Cd(6/sup 3/S/sub 1/) from the v = 0 and v = 1 states of N/sub 2/(A/sup 3/..sigma../sub u//sup +/) also have been determined. The kinetics of the N/sub 2/(A/sup 3/..sigma../sub u//sup +/) + Cd system have been examined, paying particular attention to the role of intermultiplet mixing of the Cd(/sup 3/P/sub 0,1,2/) states. The similarities between the Cd and Hg systems with N/sub 2/(A) are discussed. Preliminary experiments suggest that the CO(a/sup 3/II) + Cd reaction resembles the N/sub 2/(A) + Cd excitation-transfer system.
