Title: Health-hazard-evaluation report HETA 87-126-2019, Chrysler Chemical Division, Trenton, Michigan

In response to a confidential request from an employee, an investigation was undertaken of possible hazardous working conditions at the Chrysler Chemical Division, Trenton, Michigan. Of concern was possible exposure to asbestos, lead, and solvents. At the site the employees were involved in the production of adhesives, sealers, paints, and brake linings. This division employed about 138 hourly workers. Personal breathing zone exposure monitoring showed detectable asbestos concentrations for those employed as mixer operators, press operators, grinder operators, saw operators, and millwrights. During full operation these levels were considerably higher than during less typical times. Under full operation the jobs of BiPell Press operators, body press operators, and barker operators also showed levels of asbestos higher than the OSHA permissible exposure limit of 0.2 fibers/cubic centimeter. Medical evaluations of the employees indicated three had radiological signs consistent with pneumoconioses. Six had an obstructive pattern. The highest blood lead level was 43 micrograms/deciliter. The authors conclude that a hazard existed from exposure to asbestos. The authors recommend specific improvements for this facility to reduce the risk of asbestos exposure; the facility was closed in 1988.
