Regenerative Thermal Oxidation (RTO) Technology is the fastest growing segment of the air pollution control equipment supply market. These normally treat waste gas streams with low concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). They are the technology of choice for very large volume waste gas streams because of their ability to achieve heat recovery efficiencies at high as 95%. RTO technology emerged in the mid 1980`s. Until recently, RTO designs incorporated at least three beds packed with a heat transfer medium. However, many suppliers are now offering two bed designs. Two bed designs offer significant savings in capital costs with only a minimal reduction in unit performance. This paper presents test results from a twin bed regenerative thermal oxidation pilot unit. Data is included which shows the effect of superficial bed velocity, cycle time, and operating temperature on system performance. Data for both random and structured bed packing is presented. 4 refs., 12 figs., 1 tab.
