Title: Experimental results from a flowing-lithium target

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6204013

Hydraulic stability of a free surface lithium jet was demonstrated at 260/sup 0/C and from the middle-vacuum region of 0.01 Pa (10/sup -4/ Torr) up to 124 kPa (18 psia). The jet is formed by flowing lithium at rates to 0.04 m/sup 3//s (600 GPM) through a precisely defined nozzle which directs the flow along a curved wall where velocities of up to 17 m/s are attained. This nozzle and curved wall configuration form the basis of the Fusion Materials Irradiation Test (FMIT) Facility lithium target. A full-size experimental model of this target is presently under test with flowing lithium in the Experimental Lithium System (ELS). The FMIT is being developed for the Department of Energy by the Westinghouse Hanford Company at the Hanford Engineering Development Laboratory.
