A surfactant system useful for oil recovery consisting essentially of a surfactant, such as a petroleum sulfonate, and at least one cosurfactant selected from the group consisting of a phosphate ester of the formula: R-O-P (=O)(-O-R)-O-R and a phosphite ester represented by the formula R-O-P (-O-R)-O-R and a phosphonate ester represented by the formula R-P(=O)(-O-R)-O-R wherein R is either a methyl, ethyl or propyl group.
