Thermogravimetric properties and H/C, O/C and H/O ratios for coals of several ranks
Initial volatilization temperatures (IVT) and average voltilization rates (AVR) have been determined for thirty-six coals ranging from lignite to low-volatile bituminous. The relationship between rank, thermal behavior and chemical ratios has been investigated. For example, when IVT is plotted against O/C, IVT's increase rapidly while the O/C ratio decreases from 0.24 to 0.14 for lignites and sub-bituminous coals. In the high-volatile bituminous rank, IVT's hover near 360/sup 0/C while the O/C ratio decreases rapidly form 0.15 to 0.04. In the medium- and low-volatile bituminous ranks IVT's again increase rapidly while the O/C ratio decreases only slightly from 0.04 to 0.02. When IVT's are compared with H/C ratios, the ratios decrease gradually for lignites and sub-bituminous coals and from 0.72 to 0.61 for medium- and low-volatile bituminous coals. During the major transition between sub-bituminous and high-volatile bituminous coals the H/C ratio falls in the overlapping range from 0.88 to 0.75. The authors conclude that during the early coalification little oxygen is lost while the H/C ratio decreases through the loss of methane. During the transition from sub-bituminous to high-volatile bituminous, oxygen is lost more rapidly while hydrogen remains in the coal to produce new organic compounds which give high-volatile bituminous coal its unique properties.
