Title: Eighth largest world-city plans its land use with air pollution facts: a look at the Northeastern Illinois (Chicago area)

Book ·
OSTI ID:6187039

The methodology of the air resources management study of the Chicago, Illinois standard metropolitan statistical area being conducted by the Northeastern Illinois Metropolitan Area Planning Commission is delineated. The study is due for completion by May, 1966 and this is an interim report. A description of the gathering and analysis of all existing air pollution data in the six-county 3714 square mile area is given as well as the method of estimating existing pollutant emissions and those projected for 1990. Population of the area being studied was 6,221,000 in 1960 and is expected to increase to 9,251,000 by 1990. The micrometeorology of the six county area is explored through consultants and cooperative studies using multi-agency data and advice. The lake breeze from Lake Michigan is studied as well as the effects of topography and expansive green areas on local air pollution. The regional macrometeorology is also examined with emphasis upon duration and occurrences of stagnation periods. The need for area-wide control legislation is studied by the projection of pollutant levels for 1990 under weather stagnation conditions and other high pollution-causing conditions. Planning for land use in the region is done by examination of the micrometeorology patterns and pollutant emissions combined with data on population growth, transportation patterns, natural resource locations and intensity of existing land use. Alternative development patterns for the region are constructed as part of the completion by the Northeastern Illinois Metropolitan Area Planning Commission of a comprehensive plan for the area by December, 1966.
