The utility industry will experience new operational and economic pressures in the future. Examples of the new challenges to be faced in the 1990s are plant aging, new regulatory requirements, greater need for load-following operation, and growing environmental concern. One of the key tools for ensuring the best availability and economy of power generation is preventive maintenance based on diagnostic monitoring of plant equipment. The primary goal of preventive maintenance programs is to detect incipient damage in advance of major failure. The University of Tennessee, Department of Nuclear Engineering, is conducting preventive maintenance-related research in cooperation with industry participants. The main goal of this research program is to identify maintenance-related problems in power and process industries and to find solutions using innovative technology. Specific tasks to be performed in the initial phase of the program include development of an instrument calibration verification system, development of new techniques for valve diagnostics (air-operated and motor-operated valves), and development of new tools for computer-aided decision making in evaluating diagnostic data. The paper discusses techniques for computer-aided decision making, including mapping techniques and neural networks, preventative maintenance applications.
