Transport of energy-related organic compounds and mixtures in subsurface environments: Subsurface Transport Program
The Department of Energy's Office of Health and Environmental Research (OHER) within the Office of Energy Research is planning a 10-year program of fundamental research dealing with the transport of organic co-contaminants in subsurface environments. This research focuses on: (1) developing an improved understanding of microbiological, physical, chemical, and hydrologic processes that influence organic chemical transport in porous media; and (2) incorporating this knowledge into predictive models which reliably describe the movement, persistence, and biological availability of organic co-contaminants. Interdisciplinary research will be conducted by university-national laboratory consortia, organized initially around an intermediate scale experimental facility. Long term experiments will receive priority as fundamental research that is appropriate to government sponsorship. However, such research is obviously not a substitute for field research; rather, an iterative laboratory-intermediate scale-field program is anticipated. Advanced computer systems like the CRAY or new parallel processing systems will be used because of (1) the complexity of subsurface geochemical, microbiological, and physical reactions; (2) the nonlinearity of most flow equations; (3) a large number of dependent variables (e.g., concentration, pressure); and (4) the diversity of controlling environmental conditions (e.g., hydrogeology, substrate properties, and water chemistry).
