Remote sensing of high-latitude ionization with ISIS 2 auroral scanning photometer
Comparisons are made between ISIS-2 satellite-based photometric data and Chatanika ground-based incoherent-scatter data of auroral phenomena. The radar signals comprised 67 microsec pulses for measuring the electron density with a 10 km range resolution and 320 microsec pulses for electron velocity and density data with 40 km resolution. The ISIS 2 data were gathered with an auroral scanning photometer from a 1400 km altitude, focusing on emissions at 391.4 and 557.7 nm. The spacecraft imagery resolution varied from 9-30 km. Both discrete and diffuse aurora were observed. The comparisons cover the spatial ionization distribution and altitudinal ionization profiles. The satellite data were sufficient for F-region profile imaging at visible wavelengths if earth albedo factors were considered. 18 references.
