Title: Ordered ceramic membranes: Annual progress report, February 1986-March 1987

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6162390

Effort has focused on the solution variables that ultimately control the characteristics of the precursor sols, gels, and the ceramic membranes. We have succeeded in producing ''crack-free'' Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and TiO/sub 2/ unsupported ceramic membranes. The Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ membranes are ''particulate'' whereas we have been preparing both polymeric and particulate TiO/sub 2/ unsupported membranes. These membranes have pore diameters in the 20 to 50 A range. Major variables in both cases include the alkoxide/water ratio and the initial time and temperature of the reaction. Ionic strength seems to be of lesser importance. Sintering conditions are also important in controlling the pore size. The TiO/sub 2/ membranes supported by glass substrates are photoactive and capable of degrading polychlorinated biphenyls in aqueous solution when exposed to uv irradiation. We have also been experimenting with two types of supporting materials for producing ceramic filters. Both clay and alumina precursors have yielded supports that had sufficient strength and porosity to be candidates for membrane supports.
