Solid bowl dewatering centrifuge cuts sludge disposal costs
This article describes a solid bowl dewatering centrifuge which has significantly cut sludge disposal costs of Union Chemicals Division of Union Oil Company polymer plant in Bridgeview, IL. Installation of the solid bowl dewatering centrifuge helped upgrade the waste water treatment plant and reduce the $300,000/yr. cost of disposal of sludge. The centrifuge operates at a nominal 50-60 gpm, the centrifuge concentrates the sludge to about 32-33% solids. Water from the centrifuge is pumped back to the floc tank, while the sludge drops onto a conveyor belt for delivery to storage bins. About 80 cubic yards of sludge a month are trucked to a landfill. With current investment and operating costs, the clarifier-centrifuge addition is estimated to pay for itself in about four years.
