Title: High energy heavy ion collisions and quark degrees of freedom in nuclei

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6155232

Although the title of the workshop is suggestive of two topics, the theme is one, namely the possible manifestation of quark degrees of freedom in High Energy Heavy lon Collisions. The series of lectures on specific topics by invited speakers are only reproduced in this volume. The article by c Das Gupta reviews the various aspects of cascade model that is used in describing the medium energy heavy ion reactions. The article deals in detail with how the mean field effect and the nucleon-nucleon collisions can be taken into account in Vlasov Boltzmann equation which forms the basis of a successful microscopic theory. In practice, how this equation can be solved is demonstrated. This article will be useful for these interested in doing such calculations. L. Csernai in his first article has reviewed the various theories of fragmentation phenomena and its possible interpretation in terms of liquid gas phase transition. In this second article the hydrodynamic approach to the quark gluon plasma formation and shock wave propagation in ultra relativistic high energy heavy ion collisions have been dealt in detail. R. K. Bhaduri in his article has reviewed the quark based model of hadrons with an emphasis on the MIT base model and its variants. He has presented a detailed discussion on chiral and gauge symmetries which are proving to be very useful in nuclear physics.
