The moisture absorption, crystallinity, dynamic mechanical properties, and mechanical strength of carbon/PEEK and carbon/PPS composites were measured following exposure to temperature/humidity environments and immersion in water. Both composites exibit good moisture/temperature resistance and property retention after hygrothermal exposure. Moisture diffusion in both composites follows the Fickian diffusion model. The equilibrium moisture absorptions are 0.153 and 0.130 percent, respectively, for the carbon/PEEK and carbon/PPS composites at 80 C, 85 percent relative humidity. A crystallinity increase is observed in the case of the carbon/PPS composite exposed to 80 C, 85 percent RH, which correlates with the damping properties in the dynamic mechanical study. For the carbon/PEEK composite, the hygrothermal effect on crystallinity is negligible. The mechanical properties of the carbon/PEEK composite decrease slightly with the increasing temperature/moisture and exposure time, whereas the opposite effect is observed in the case of the carbon/PPS composite. 13 refs.
