Title: Mild hydrocracking - A flexible option to produce high quality middle distillate

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6106077

The sharp changes in the price of oil seen over the last 18 months have made oil demand forecasting a particularly hazardous occupation. The needs for higher quality middle distillate products could be met by installing high pressure middle distillate hydrocracking capacity. However, such technology is capital intensive and the high hydrogen consumption necessary leads to high operating costs. Such investments fall far short of the criteria of low cost and rapid pay back presently set by refinery management. The conversion of existing VGO hydrotreating capacity to mild hydrocracking (MHC) duty does meet the criteria and gives the refiner added flexibility at low cost. VGO hydrotreatment capacity which can be converted has been installed either for catalytic cracking pretreatment (in the USA and Europe) or for fuel oil desulphurisation (in Japan). In this paper, MHC technology developed by BP is described with particular attention being given to the interaction of MHC with Catalytic Cracking.
