Conceptual models of possible stream-aquifer relations in the vicinity of the Savannah River Site, Georgia and South Carolina
- Geological Survey, Atlanta, GA (United States)
Possible hydrologic conditions conducive to movement or potential movement of ground water beneath the Savannah River (trans-river flow) near the U.S. Department of Energy, Savannah River Site (SRS) are being evaluated as part of a study by the US Geological Survey, in cooperation with the US Department of Energy and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The objectives of the study are to determine if trans-river is presently occurring, and if not determine under what conditions trans-river flow could occur. Hypothetical profiles transecting the Savannah River basin were constructed showing possible flow paths in the stream-aquifer system. The profiles are being used to guide project strategy and data-collection. Hypothetical hydrogeologic conditions depicted on the profiles include (1) Savannah River fully incising the water-table aquifer; (2) Savannah River partially incising the water-table aquifer; and (3) incisement of uppermost confining unit by the Savannah River. The profiles indicate that trans-river flow probably does not occur in the water-table aquifer where the aquifer is fully incised by the Savannah River. However, trans-river flow in the water table aquifer might occur in areas where the aquifer is partially incised by the river and the regional hydraulic gradient is transverse to the river. In confined aquifers, trans-river flow might occur in areas where the regional hydraulic gradient is transverse to the river, regardless of the degree of river incision into overlying aquifers. The potential for trans-river flow may be enhanced in areas where pumping has altered the configuration of the regional hydraulic gradient.
