This paper reports on criteria used to design shafts may limit operating characteristics that can be obtained from electric machines. Most small machines are designed to rigid shaft criterion without any concern for possible effects on operating performance. Large, high-speed machines that operate only at constant speed may be well suited to flexible shaft design. High-speed machines that operate over a wide, unrestricted speed range may be better suited to rigid shaft design. Basic mechanical factors and construction features that determine an ultimate limit on available power ratings, for a given maximum operating speed, are discussed.
