Title: EPA details effects of 11 NSPS (new source performance standards) options

Journal Article · · Coal Min. Process.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6052333

EPA has published detailed analyses on the economic, environmental, and energy production effects of 11 possible options in EPA's revision of the new source performance standards (NSPS) for electric powerplants: three full scrubbing options requiring 90% sulfur removal, one full scrubbing option with 95% sulfur removal, and seven partial scrubbing variations. The 11 variations are the result of additional work done by EPA since it proposed the revised NSPS. The new computer modeling results are based on a reexamination of the assumptions used earlier by EPA following consultation with the US Department of Energy, Council of Economic Advisers, Council on Wage and Price Stability, and others. National coal production, shipments of western coal into the east, and utility oil and gas use were projected for each of the 11 alternatives. In 1990, western coal shipped east could range from a low of 60 million tons to a high of 95 million tons, while total US coal production could range from 1435 million tons to 1450 million tons.
