Title: Method for removing pyritic, organic and elemental sulfur from coal

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6006557

This patent describes a process for removing sulfur and ash from coal and other carbonaceous materials which contain pyritic sulfur, sulfides, elemental sulfur, organic sulfur and/or sulfate sulfur. This method consists of: 1) treating an aqueous slurry of coal or other carbonaceous materials at an elevated temperature below the oxidation temperature of the coal or other carbonaceous materials and in the presence of an oxidizing agent capable of reducing pyritic sulfides to a soluble state with: (a) formulation that consists of one or more alkaline earth metal chlorides, one or more alkali metal chlorides or a mixture of the chlorides, and a treating agent, and an inorganic acid. Provided that if iron is not present in the coal or other carbonaceous material, then ferric chloride is present in the slurry containing in formulation (1) or (b) a formulation that consists of: a hypochlorite or a mixture of hypochlorites, a treating agent, and a mixture of (a) and an inorganic acid. Provided that if iron is not present in the coal or other carbonaceous material ferric chloride is present in the slurry containing the formulation (2). Then all the sulfur extracted from the coal or other carbonaceous material is converted to sulfate sulfur or water soluble sulfurs.
