Laramie River Station: new power along the Oregon Trail
The threat of a court-ordered halt to the Missouri Basin Power Project, a joint coal-fired undertaking of six small utilities designed to vitalize an improverished area, was met with strong opposition by local residents. The concept of a single regional system to supply power at wholesale was carefully planned, as were provisions for an orderly economic and population growth and for careful site selection of the three proposed units. A chronological review of the planning and development stages is followed by the events surrounding two lawsuits which nearly stopped the project. A settlement was reached when the project participants agreed to limit water use and to finance protection for a migratory bird habitat and legal fees.
