Title: Health-hazard evaluation determination report No. 76-6-294, J. A. Devine, D. D. S. , Cheyenne, Wyoming

A health-hazard evaluation conducted at the J. A. Devine Dental Clinic in Cheyenne, Wyoming, indicates that concentrations of mercury during the evaluation range from less than 0.01 microgram to 0.18 milligram per cubic meter, which is in excess of the NIOSH standard of 0.05 milligram per cubic meter and hence a potential health hazard to the employees. Recommendations include tightly closed capsules during amalgamation, removal of carpeting from dental operatories, salvaging all amalgam scraps and storing in a closed container with a layer of water over the amalgam, immediate vacuuming of spilled mercury using special vacuum cleaners fitted with charcoal filters, elimination of the hand squeezing of amalgam, and comprehensive medical examination of all employees including analysis of urine, and looking for specific symptoms of mercury absorption such as weight loss, sleeplessness, tremors, and personality change.
