Dynamical role of a primordial electromagnetic field in spatially homogeneous, diagonal Bianchi type I--IX cosmologies
The possible structure of a sourceless primordial electromagnetic field (which is admissible only for class A diagonal Bianchi metrics), its dynamical behavior, its role near the initial singularity, and its influence on the isotropization process are examined in terms of homogeneous, anisotropic cosmologies. In Bianchi type VI/sub 0/, VII/sub 0/ models a pure magnetic primordial field will cause a new form of oscillatory asymptotic approach to the singularity tau = 0, but in types VIII, IX the coupled electromagnetic field will have little effect on the ''mixmaster'' vacuum regime. The primordial magnetic field hypothesis is compatible only with parabolic, isotropizing, quasi-Euclidean models (primarily Bianchi types I, VII/sub 0/), provided the energy density is near-critical (..cap omega.. = epsilon-c/sub 0//epsilon-c/sub c/roughly-equal1).
