The Seventh International Symposium on Capture Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy and Related Topics was held at the Asilomar Conference Center, Pacific Grove (Monterey peninsula) California, on October 14--19, 1990. This symposium is part of a series of meetings whose thematic material has included capture gamma-ray spectroscopy and which were held in Studsvik, Sweden (1969), Petten, The Netherlands (1974), Brookhaven, USA (1978), Grenoble, France (1981), Knoxville, USA (1984), and Leuven, Belgium (1987). The 1990 Symposium was sponsored by the American Physical Society, the US Department of Energy, and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The five-day Symposium was attended by 167 participants from 23 countries. The Symposium program was designed to continue the general themes of the earlier conferences, with emphasis on recent experimental and theoretical developments in low-energy nuclear physics as determined with a variety of nuclear probes including capture reactions. Topics discussed during the Symposium were the following: neutron and proton capture (high-resolution gamma spectroscopy, short lifetimes, gamma-ray production, reaction mechanisms), nuclear structure (collective and single-particle phenomena, superdeformation, proton-neutron interactions), statistical properties of nuclear levels (chaotic behavior), nuclear astrophysics (nucleosynthesis, chronometry), fundamental physics with neutrons (neutron lifetime), new facilities, new instrumentations, new neutron sources, and applications (elemental mapping of planetary surfaces, analysis of near-surface solid-state reactions).
