Foliar peroxidase and acid phosphatase activity response to low level SO/sub 2/ exposure in eastern white pine clones

Tolerant and sensitive clones of eastern white pine were fumigated for 2 hr with 150 ..mu..g m/sup -3/ (5 pphm) SO/sub 2/. Peroxidase (PER) and acid phosphate (AP) activity was measured in extracts from foliage collected immediately prior to fumigation, and at 0, 2, 4, and 24 hr following fumigation. Extracts from sensitive clones exhibited greater PER activity than tolerant clones. Fumigation did not significantly increase PER activity in either class. Tolerant and sensitive controls did not differ in AP activity. Foliar PER activity may hold promise for screening individuals in tree improvement programs.
