Copper-nickel catalysts from various sources were studied by adsorption, x-ray diffraction analysis, and XPES. The physicochemical properties thus obtained were compared with the catalysts' dissymmetric properties in the liquid-phase hydrogenation of ethyl acetoacetate. Change in the nature of the starting compound (oxide, carbonate, hydroxide) affected both the phase and the surface composition of the catalysts. The extent of nickel reduction in copper-nickel catalyst affects the optical yield of the reaction. On the basis of these results it is proposed that the composition of the active center in the test catalysts includes Ni/sup 0/, Cu/sup 0/, and Ni/sup 2 +/.
