This dissertation concerns the management of computer programs, the utilization of software in a nuclear power plant, and the methods the nuclear power industry uses in certifying this software is correct and therefore suitable for real time use in a nuclear power plant. The need is established for improved management skills and attitudes prevalent in the nuclear power industry. It is concluded that quality assurance as it exists today in the nuclear power industry is inadequate. It is further concluded that the basis exists to certify software, and that therefore a certification process, although currently non-existent, can and will exist in the near term future. (LEW)
