Title: Thin seams can bring clean profits

Journal Article · · Coal Age; (United States)
OSTI ID:5812374

Some 10.8% of all coal mined underground in the US comes from seams less than 42 in. thick. Mining costs tend to be high because of the slow rates of advance that can be achieved under these conditions. Machinery which has been developed specifically for thin-seam mining is described. Continuous haulage is being used increasingly. Although longwall working was introduced into the US for working thin seams, by December 1982 only 4 out of 112 longwall faces in the country were operating in seams below 42 in. The advantages and disadvantages of the system are indicated. Finally, the improvement of equipment to improve workers comfort in difficult conditions is discussed.
