The history of urban air pollution is outlined. The health hazards and epidemiology of air pollution are also discussed. The difficulties associated with identifying the relationships between disease and air pollution are analyzed - the principal one being the fact that often, air pollution predisposes one to be more susceptible to a given disease, while not causing the disease directly. A plea is made for organized research on the health effects of air pollution.
