Title: Lead in the marine environment

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5761570

This book constitutes the Proceedings of the International Experts Discussion on Lead Occurrence, Fate and Pollution in the Marine Environment held at Rovinj, Yugoslavia, 18-22 October, 1977. Of the 26 contributions, 7 papers deal with the analytical chemistry of lead and its alkyl derivatives; 5 describe the chemical speciation and complex formation in sea water of this metal; 7 consider aspects of its biotransformation and toxicity (mainly in marine animals); and 7 articles give details on the occurrence, distribution and dispersion of lead in coastal waters and the oceans. The various speciation studies reported agree that PbCO/sub 3/ is the most abundant lead complex in seawater. C. C. Patterson and his colleagues demonstrate unequivocally (but in somewhat arrogant fashion) that contamination has marred many of the reported lead levels for seawater and marine animal tissues. The inventories of lead concentrations provided for open and coastal waters emphasize the global nature of lead pollution. Although the multi-author format has allowed for numerous details on the current research methods employed and the results obtained, considerable repetition of material has occurred. Nevertheless, the abundance of data, and the methodological detail make this a useful reference book. (JMT)
