The Soviet foreign trading organization V.O. Machinoimport has ordered 42 Coberra gas turbine/compressors (costing pounds 100 million or $170 million) from COBERROW Ltd., a British consortium owned by Cooper-Bessemer of Canada, Rolls-Royce (1971) Ltd., and Williams Overseas Ltd. The turbocompressors will power six compressor stations on an 800-mile 56-in. gas pipeline running from western Siberia to the City of Chelyabinsk. Each 18,200-hp Coberra unit will consist of a Cooper-Bessemer RT48 2-stage power turbine direct-coupled to a C-B RF2BB30 pipeline centrifugal compressor and a Rolls-Royce Avon Mark 1534 industrial gas generator.
