Title: Solar users tell how to increase system efficiency

Journal Article · · Build. Des. Constr.; (United States)

Realizing the potential energy efficiency of solar systems remains a major problem. The performance of flat plate solar collectors installed at Hogate's Restaurant in Washington, DC to supply energy for the 26,500 liters of hot water used daily is described. Lessons learned on a solar installation at NASA's Langley Systems Engineering Building, Hampton, VA are described. The system has 1180 square meters of 7 types of flat plate collectors, providing 57% of the energy required to heat and cool the building. Results of some economic aspects of hotel/motel hot water systems are also discussed on tests being performed at DOE's Ames (Iowa) Laboratory.
