Title: Ozone levels at Hamilton, Ontario

Conference · · Proc., Annu. Meet., Air Pollut. Control Assoc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5731977

The Hamilton air pollution program and the network of sampling stations have been described. The ozone levels measured at two sites, the Municipal Laboratories and the City Hall, are then analyzed. Ozone values in winter are very low, averaging less than 1 pphm. In summer, the concentrations are generally in the range 1 to 4 pphm but occasionally can exceed 10 pphm. Ozone levels are generally higher at the Municipal Laboratories than at the downtown station. There is a diurnal ozone cycle, with a mean maximum about 2-3 pm and a minimum near sunrise. At the Municipal Laboratories, concentrations are slightly higher on weekends and holidays than on week days; there is no similar effect at the City Hall station. When data are stratified by considering only days for which the wind direction was steady throughout the daylight hours, some interesting patterns are found. In particular, chemically-reducing materials emitted from the industrial zone between the two sampling sites exceed the oxidant content of the atmosphere. The figures also show that ozone concentrations are higher on sunny than on cloudy days. A study of ozone trends associated with lake-breezes has proved to be complex and will be the subject of further experimental work. Finally, concurrent measurements of ozone and 5 other air quality parameters at the City Hall station have been analyzed. Low ozone values are associated with low oxidant levels but high values of SO/sub 2/, NO/sub 2/, COH and aerosols. 3 references, 10 figures, 6 tables.
