A theory is derived for the nonlinear electrostatic waves in an unbounded cold plasma in which there is a beam of charged particles. The nonlinearity of the motion of the beam particles leads to the possible existence of solitary waves. The conditions for the existence and the shape of the solitary waves are determined for the cases of electron and ion beams.
