Merrion v. Jicarilla Apache Tribe was a Supreme Court case which recognized the right of Indian tribes to benefit from the wealth generated by mineral development on tribal land. The historical background of tribal authority to tax non-Indians engaged in economic activity on reservation land is presented, and the approach taken by the Supreme Court to analyze the extent of inherent tribal sovereignty is examined. 108 references.
