Water1977 (dewatering of sludges from oil fired electric power generating plants)
Pollutants removed from wastewaters from power generating plants produce sludges that are usually deposited in landfill sites. Since the cost of hauling and disposal increases as the amount of sludge increases, sludge generation volume is an important consideration in evaluating the economic feasibility of a treatment system. Sludge volume is a function of the chemical composition of wastewater streams, the chemicals used for treatment, and the equipment used for sludge dewatering. Laboratory and pilot plant tests of plant waste sludges were conducted to aid in selecting a chemical precipitant for pollutant removal, and to compare the advantages and drawbacks of the recessed plate filter press and the vacuum filter for sludge dewatering. Filter presses produced drier cakes than vacuum filters produced, and were favored when the sludge had to be hauled long distances from the power plant to the landfill site. (2 diagrams, 7 tables)
