Title: Process for the solubilization of mercaptobenzothiazole in a lubricating oil composition

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5670678

A process is described for preparing an amine salt solution of a substituted or unsubstituted mercaptobenzothiazole solubilized at room temperature and adapted for compatible admixture into a lubricating oil composition. The process consists of: (1) reacting to form the salt, in the absence of an oxidizing agent, at least one mercaptobenzothiazole represented by the structural formula; wherein each R independently represents hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or alkaryl; with at least one amine represented by the structural formula; NR/sub 1/R/sub 2/R/sub 3/ wherein R/sub 1/ and R/sub 2/ independently represent hydrogen of about C/sub 2/ to C/sub 20/ alkyl, and R/sub 3/ represents alkyl or alkenyl having from about 6 to about 25 carbon atoms; and wherein the molar ratio at which the amine and mercaptobenzothiazole are reacted is from about 1.1:1 to about 0.7:1; (2) admixing the amine salt prepared in accordance with step (1) with at least one solvent in a manner and under conditions sufficient to render the salt soluble in the solvent at room temperature, the solvent being represented by the structural formula; wherein n represents a number of from 1 to 3, and each R/sub 8/ independently is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl and alkaryl.
