As parts of its ongoing effort to become a national clearinghouse for information on dam safety in the states, the Association of State Dam Safety Officials compiles data on changes in state dam safety laws and regulations on a year-to-year basis. By examining changes in dam safety statutes, administrative regulations, and related information during 1991, ASDSO has identified several trends. Dam safety laws and regulations passed in 1991 in various states across the US emphasize increased state regulation, preventative action for dam safety, and environmental protection. Eleven states enacted changes in their dam safety statutes or administrative regulations in 1991: Hawaii, Iowa, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington State, and West Virginia. Changes in statutes and regulations for 1992 are pending in Louisiana, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.
