The design, testing, and performance of nonlinear overvoltage limiters for 110 to 500 kV systems are discussed. Laboratory studies, network tests and prolonged operating experience with a large number of non-linear overvoltage limiters with resistors based on zinc oxide showed their reliability and high technical efficiency. In projects for 500 kV open distribution units and 110 and 220 kV enclosed distribution units the use of overvoltage limiters decreases the cost of construction by about 15% and reduces the area and volume of the substations by 25 to 50%.
