Energy in the developing countries
At the outset, the developing countries are classified into 14 different categories depending primarily on the availability of oil and the urgency of fuelwood problems. Perspectives for the decade beginning in 1980 cover energy policy, investment and energy production, management of the energy demand, and external financing. Prospects for energy production in the developing countries are considered on a regional basis for oil, natural gas, coal, synthetic fuels, renewable energy sources and electric power. The demands for energy for agriculture, household use, transportation, industry and electric power are analyzed. A description of the World Bank program for energy development is presented. Annexes provide data for classifying developing countries by region, income group and net trade in oil, and on world reserves of oil and gas, heavy oil, oil shale, coal and hydroelectricity.
