Ocean Acoustic processing: A model-based approach
The location of acoustical sources in a cluttered and noisy ocean environment is a difficult problem especially in light of the improved design of modern submarines. Therefore, it is necessary to incorporate more knowledge about the ocean environment into detection and localization algorithms in order to enhance the overall signal-to-noise ratios and improve performance. In an effort to improve the performance of the beamformer for complex ocean environments -- the matched-field processor has evolved as a potential solution. Here the plane wavefront steering'' vector is replaced with the general wavefront matching'' vector generated by a sophisticated propagation model characterizing the operational environment. We propose a model-based approach to the ocean acoustic signal processing problem. Assuming a horizontally stratified ocean medium, the normal mode solution to the acoustic propagation problem is utilized. Using this model of the field and a known acoustic source location, the modal functions and pressure field can be estimated from noisy array measurements using a model-based processor. First, the propagation model is cast into state-space form -- a convenient representation for eventual model-based signal processing. It is shown that this characterization can be used to propagate both the modal and range functions, given the basic parameters (eigenvalues, etc.) developed from the solution of the associated boundary-value problem. In the stochastic case an approximate Gauss-Markov representation evolves.
