Title: Well tool stopping devices, systems and methods

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5623590

A device is described for stopping well tools moving through a well flow conduit consisting of: a tubular housing means connectable in the well flow conduit in axial relation and having an annular inclined cam shoulder and a lateral port in the wall; b. sleeve means in the housing movable longitudinally relative to the cam shoulder, the sleeve having windows; c. tool stopping lugs carried in the windows of the sleeve means and movable radially between inner tool engaging and outer tool releasing positions; d. resilient spring means having one end supported by the housing means and the other end engaged with and yieldably urging the sleeve means in a first direction to cause the lug means to move to one of the inner and outer positions; e. pressure responsive means including a piston on the sleeve means and having a pressure responsive surface for moving the sleeve in the opposite direction to cause the lug means to be moved to the other of the inner and outer tool engaging positions, the pressure responsive means being responsive to fluid pressure transmitted into the housing means from exterior through the lateral port; f. first resilient seal means sealing between the piston and the housing means below the lateral port; g. second resilient seal means sealing between the sleeve means and the housing means above the lateral port, the difference between the areas sealed by the first and second seal means defining the pressure responsive surface of the piston; and h. means on the sleeve means and the housing means coengageable to limit longitudinal movement of the sleeve means relative to the housing means.
