This study is part of a research project whose objective is to develop trivalent lanthanide and actinide complexes with soft-donor ligands, to compare their bonding properties, and to enhance the bonding differences of 4f and 5f ions coordinated to soft donors. The stability constants of 1:1 complexes of several M{sup 3+} (M=lanthanide or actinide) ions with the hexadentate ligand tetrakis (2-pyridyl-methyl)-1,2-ethylenediamine (TPEN) have been determined by potentiometry or by distribution measurements. The La{sup 3+} and Tb{sup 3+} complexes are known from crystal structures to be 10-coordinated to six TPEN nitrogens and to four oxygens from two nitrates. Of particular interest is the fact that in these complexes the soft donor nitrogen coordinates to f-element ions in the presence of hard donor oxygens of water. The stability constants will be compared with those of other hexadentate ligands with oxygen donors.
