Some of the most promising potential uses of surfactant-templated mesoporous materials are in the form of supported films for applications such as inorganic membranes, catalysts, and optically-based sensors. Here we report the formation of a family of mesoporous films from initially homogeneous sols by a continuous surfactant-templated process with a time scale of several seconds. During sol-gel dip-coating, solvent evaporation induces the progressive evolution of structure (homogeneous{yields}micellar{yields}liquid crystalline), allowing us to tailor the final film mesostructure via the initial surfactant concentration. We monitor the complete film deposition process in situ in real time using an optical probe technique. Surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based N{sub 2}-sorption is used to directly evaluate the pore size and pore accessibility of the deposited films.
