Representatives of the nuclear industry, nuclear waste programs, local governments, and state and federal waste agencies testified at a two-day hearing on the status of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act (NWPA) of 1982 implementation. Witnesses were asked to explore five major issues: scheduling problems, the validity of complaints about cooperative aspects, the political impact of the Monitored Retrievable Storage (MRS) facility, the adequacy of the plan, and the need for legislative revisions. Witnesses spoke of public concerns about the transport of radioactive wastes and the technological problems of storage. A report from the Oak Ridge, Tennessee, MRS Task Force evaluated DOE's MRS facility proposal for the area and concluded that a safe facility is possible if its regulatory and economic recommendations are followed. Two appendices with additional materials and responses submitted for the record follow the testimony of the 11 witnesses.
